Even with man's advancements in developing increasingly intricate microprocessors and ever taller skyscrapers, there's one thing we cannot do. We cannot make a completely perfect sphere. Sure, we can get close. But a new problem has provoked a more perfect execution. The kilogram needs to be standardized across many countries as the 120-year-old physical platinum standard is changing in mass. And deviations in measurement have screwed up the value of a kilogram across the globe.
Luckily one man could create the perfect sphere. And he could do it by hand.
Achim Leistner was an optical engineer from the Australian Center for Precision Optics, pulled out of retirement to create two perfect spheres.
Another team started by creating a pure batch of silicon-28, spun in ex-Soviet centrifuges that were once used for uranium. Then in Germany, a team grew a pure crystal from the silicon, which was sliced into blocks and sent to Leistner.
Leistner and his crew used two spinning rotors to grind the spheres by hand—a process that took several months to complete. Their resulting spheres were accurate in smoothness to 0.3 nanometers and curvature to 60 to 70 nanometers. New Scientist explains that if these spheres were increased to Earth proportions, you'd see smoothness deviations of only 12 to 15 mm and roundness variation of 3 to 5 meters.

The key difference is that while Nintendo's globe is fun enough to use, it's essentially just spinning around a cartoon. The PS3's globe will not only be displayed in a far higher resolution (1080p we're guessing), but it will feature a global weather satellite image. So instead of just seeing the forecast, users will be able to see the weather.
In addition, clicking on regional news will load up a webpage, which some are interpreting to mean that Sony is more open to their news content partners than Nintendo's closed system.
And then the globe will go one step further into the future. According to Hirai:
As usual, I'm sure it makes for a beautiful tech demo. But until we get a firm release date, it's just another PlayStation Home. For the primary version the application sticks to the present time but in the future we plan to build a system that can visually present stored photos and movies according to their recorded time and place, allowing users with their friends and family to enjoy the visuals in chronological order.
The Titanic falls into the same category as Mickey Mouse in that it’s probably harder to find someone who hasn’t heard of it, than someone who has. But if you’re not familiar with the Titanic, as I recall it was a wildly popular movie from a decade ago that was later turned into a great sea disaster. And believe it or not, as famous as the ship has become, this 1:48 scale model of the Titanic is the first one ever built. (Or so the website selling it claims.) Belfast, Ireland based Harland & Wolff, who built the real Titanic, never released the plans outside of their company. But in 1995 another company called Fine Art Models convinced them to work together to produce this ‘definitive’ model.
Apparently this version of the Titanic took 7 years to build, which is actually longer than it took the shipyard to build the real one. Since its completion the model has toured the world via museums and other private exhibits, but it’s now available to one lucky buyer with deep, deep pockets. So what does $2.5 million get you? Here’s a breakdown of the ship’s finer features:
• The model is over 18 feet long
• The hull is a fiberglass form plated and riveted with brass plating, per the original plans, using more than 3,376,000 rivets, composed of three (3) different styles.
• Every bulkhead is in its proper location
• The entire superstructure is constructed of brass.
• The model weighs 1,500 pounds
• The decking is real wood, as is the deck furniture, which is crafted to exact proportions.
• All exterior windowed rooms are to scale, including the furniture and décor inside each room
• The telegraph in the Bridge is internally lit
• Its lighting is so complex that it required the installation of more than 8 miles of fiber optic cable.
I can’t deny that this is easily the most impressive and detailed model I’ve ever seen that’s not made from LEGO. But unless you’re sticking it in a museum and charging people 2 bits a gander, I can’t see why anyone would spend this much money. Unless of course you’ve grown tired of rubber ducks and plan to bust it out of the glass display case and enjoy it in the bathtub.

It's not really clear how the Orange Dream software helps you do things like lose weight, quit smoking or meditate, but the general assumption is that it flashes images in your face Clockwork-Orange style to reprogram your brain to associating delicious, flavorful cigarettes with something unappealing like third degree burns or mining accidents.
As people seek out all manner of gadget-powered therapy--even for their pets--there may be something much simpler available to soothe the soul. Such as a "Sound Bubbler."
This iPod dock's name pretty much says it all, as it releases bubbles in sync with the beat and rhythm of your tunes, according to Chip Chick. It even comes in three colors, though they have a long way to go before re-creating a true '60s atmosphere. Still, it's better than nothing if you're whiling away the time while chained to the desk and sure beats USB aromatherapy.
If only they could combine this with a swirling vortex, we might be able to cut back on the valium once and for all. Maybe.

Another hot new gaming PC has turned up a CeBIT, this time its the Asus ARES CG6150, and while a current press release has been made, the stunning looking piece of machinery is sure to have hearts racing. It promises to bring a hardcore gaming experience from a case that looks like a cross between the Starship Enterprise and red lights like the car from Knightrider. Wow!
If you opened it up, you would find a Core 2 Extreme processor, up to 8GB of RAM and up to a massive 4TB of hard drive space. This thing has better air cooling than my car and will probably use more power than my house!

The lightweight headset (10g) offers up to 6 hours talk time, runs for up to 10 days on standby and has four sixes of fitting. But once you remove the headset’s speaker cover, the BiZZ is transformed into a USB key. No actual storage in the unit though - you need to add your own MicroSD or SDHC card, which will offer storage of up to 8GB whenever you need it. And as one final bonus, if offers charging via USB.
