Kota the Triceratops makes our childhood toys look like wooden blocks

As if there weren't enough toys out there already to make us grown-ups incredibly envious of kids today, Playskool's now taken the wraps off its new Kota the Triceratops "toy," which looks to be the closest thing to a Pleo that you (or, rather, your kids) can actually ride. While we're guessing Kota's few notches below Pleo on the robo-evolutionary ladder, the 40-inch tall toy at least has movement sensors on nine areas of its body, and is able to react to you by moving its head, tail, mouth, and horns, not to mention play "adventure-themed songs" at the push of a button. Look for it to be available this fall for about $300, with six D cell batteries required to power it.

Smeg High Tech Home Garden

I know plants can be a healthy addition to your home, but I find they’re just too demanding what with the constant need for watering and sunlight. (My apartment is just slightly brighter than a cave, given all the glowing LEDs.) But the Smeg Home Garden can actually take care of all that hassle for you. It’s a fancy glass and metal miniature greenhouse that provides the plants inside with all the comforts of being in their natural environment.

From what I can tell you select one of three different micro-climate settings that best cater to the plants you’ve imprisoned. Humid, dry or temperate. An automated system will then ensure the plants get enough light via an artificial light source in the roof, the proper amount of humidity via a vaporizing system as well as a constant temperature pattern that will keep them looking alive and healthy. Because the structure is entirely covered with glass the plants are visible from every angle, and it also seems to include a remote control with a keypad lock to ensure no one tampers with your greenery. (Cause we’ve all heard stories of just how cutthroat the gardening world can be.)

If Apple Made a Toilet: Air Poo, With Multi-Touch

The Air Poo is everything Apple could stuff into a toilet, minus OS X. The multi-touch flushpad intuitively uses one finger swipe to send no. 1 down the pipes and two fingers for no. 2, which its built-in iPod dock and surround sound masks with "crystal clear highs and bowel-shaking lows."

There's a dock for the "greatest laptop available" for potty-surfing, and of course, a heated toilet seat to keep your bum toasty for as long as your MacBook Air battery lasts. It's rumored that the next firmware update will bring cushioned ass-wiping with faux GPS for incredibly accurate strokes to the feature list, for only $20.

Telecom immunity for domestic spying dies on House floor

he House of Representatives just took a long weekend break without voting on the Spy bill sent down from the Senate. As such, our beloved carriers' hopes for immunity from those pesky US privacy laws have disintegrated. At least for the time being -- the fight between the baddies and goodies (however you define that) isn't over by a long shot.

Geneva 08: Rinspeed sQuba diving car video and mega-gallery

Fantasies of James Bond’s underwater exploits running through your head? Thanks to Rinspeed’s Squba, you can make your fantasies real - provided you have a suitably adventurous companion and a desire to submerge a perfectly good Lotus, of course. We brought you the initial story on Rinspeed’s plans last December, but now the real thing is getting ready for Geneva. Read on for a video and full gallery.

A zero-emission vehicle, the sQuba has the capability to drive on land, on water and up to 10m under water. Thanks to its Lotus chassis, the sQuba moves like a cat on land, and with Swiss firm Esoro’s help, it moves like a fish underwater. The first step in the process was removing the car’s dependance on air - so the petrol motor was out, and electric motors were in. Next the car had to be sealed air tight - electricity and water don’t mix, after all - although the open top means the passenger compartment is flooded when under water. Power comes from lithium-ion batteries - and the zero-emission status of the car is reinforced by another Bond gadget: a rotating license plate in the rear.

While underwater, the car is powered by SeaBob jet drives that reside in directional nozzles on the sides of the vehicle. Three motors provide propulsion, one on land and the other two in the water. Occupants breathe from an integrated compressed air tank similar to those used by scuba divers. The open top of the vehicles isn’t just for sun-and-surf cruising: if things get ugly underwater, the open top makes for easy exit - and when you’re being chased by evil super-villains, things have a tendency to get ugly.

The sQuba will be on show at Geneva next month, but until then we have an extensive gallery of photos and a video to fuel your imagination.

World’s first RHD Ford GT

It’s no secret Australians love a good V8 muscle car but we never thought there would be enough demand Down Under for Ford’s stunning GT supercar that a company would actually starting converting them to right-hand-drive for the local market. Actually, two companies, Crossover Car Conversions and Mustang Motorsport, based out of Melbourne, have converted their first Ford GT and have already taken it to a race track for testing.

The car is now going through the formal approval process to meet Australian Design Rules, and is expected to be delivered to its lucky owner within the next few weeks. “Handing this car over is going to be a proud moment, both in terms of the quality of our work and also just for the fact that the Ford GT is such a phenomenal car,” Mustang Motorsport’s Craig Dean said recently.

The car sells in Australia for half a million dollars, roughly $452,000USD at current conversion rates, but so far only six cars are scheduled to be modified and all have already been pre-sold. If you live in Australian and still want an American Ford muscle car, the company also offers a Mustang GT conversion.

Geneva reveal for Morgan LIFEcar prototype

At the 2008 Geneva Motor Show Morgan will unveil the LifeCar concept, a fuel cell hybrid sportscar based on the Aero Eight and developed in partnership with QinetiQ, OSCar and Oxford University. We report some images and details of the project.
We gave the first details of the project on last March 2007. Now, given the upcoming debut of the LifeCar running prototype at the Geneva Motor Show, we take the chance to report additional information and images from the design and construction process.

LifeCar is a project started in 2005 that invoves Oscar Automotive, Cranfield University, QinetiQ, Oxford University, Linde AG and Morgan Motor Company.

The goals of the projetct are to demonstrate "that a zero emission vehicle can also be fun to drive" and to lower the entry barriers for hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles.

The approach is one of whole system design in which the architecture is generated from the characteristics of the fuel cell, in a light-weight vehicle coupled with a high hybridization level.

This combination will minimise the fuel cell cost and provide the fuel economy for a 200 mile range.

LIFECar will be based on the Morgan Aero Eight, and is powered by a QinetiQ-made fuel cell, which converts hydrogen – and oxygen taken from the air around it – into electrical energy.

“The real challenge is to design and build a car that is fun to drive – a proper sports car” quoted Charles Morgan, the strategy director for the Morgan Motor Company.

“The use of ultra capacitors to store the surplus energy and then use this for acceleration and braking does promise a dynamic ride, especially when combined with our ultra light chassis. The pairing of weight to a minimum is our strength, and allows a much smaller fuel cell than conventionally thought necessary. This gives energy and yet more weight savings”

Part funded by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI), LIFECar has been a 2 ½ year project. The consortium hopes that the LIFECar will produce a combination of performance, range and fuel economy that should alter our view of motoring for the future.

The key to delivering this step change in energy efficiency lies in a combination of factors, including weight reduction and a different design approach.

Costing a total of £1.9m, with a mix of industry and DTI funding, the two and a half year project has been broken down into the following areas of responsibility.

Technical Partners

  • BOC - Developing the hydrogen refuelling plant
  • Cranfield University - Systems simulation , on-board computing and control networks
  • Oxford University - Design and control of re-generative electric motors
  • QinetiQ - Developing the proton exchange membrane fuel cell
  • Morgan Motor Company - Building the finalised design using light weight technology
  • OSCar - Overall system design and architecture

Ferrari ends 2007 with record-breaking results

Ferrari may be one of the most exclusive brands on the planet but you’d be hard pressed to guess it’s a niche player by looking at its financial performance alone. The guys from Maranello experienced a record year in 2007, with almost all major economic indicators showing positive gains and sales numbers up in virtually every market Ferraris are sold in.

Revenues (turnover) increased from the €1,447 million recorded in 2006 to €1,668 million in 2007, a jump of 15.3%, thanks in great part to brilliant sales of the F430 and 599 GTB Fiorano. A total of 6,465 road cars (not including track car sales) were delivered to end clients, an increase of 14% on 2006.

This ensured profits were also up, reaching a significant €266 million, a massive 45.4% increase on the previous year’s figure. The exceptional results obtained were predominately thanks to increased sales volumes and efficiency measures, and this was in a year where Ferrari also spent record levels for R&D. This major increase also comes despite the fall in the value of the U.S. dollar, a currency in which around 30% of Ferrari sales are made.

Zero-emissions car that runs on fossil fuels

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a strategy to capture, store and eventually recycle carbon from vehicles that run on fossil fuels such as petrol or diesel. Their concept car uses ordinary liquid fuel but the carbon contained in the fuel is trapped in the vehicle for later processing. It can then be sent back to a processing plant where it could be transformed into new fuel.

The set-up requires an onboard fuel processor designed to separate hydrogen in the fuel from the carbon. The pure hydrogen is then used to power the vehicle, while the carbon is stored onboard in a liquid form until it’s disposed at a refueling station. Initial tests have proven that the system can work reliably but the concept is still in a very early stage.

Now that researchers have come up with a device to produce hydrogen and, at the same time, capture carbon emissions, the greatest remaining challenge will be to develop and market the technology. Unfortunately, most carmakers are investigating ways of reducing the amount of emissions their cars produce but if this new technology gains some ground we could eventually see a future with a sustainable transportation system with no carbon emissions at all.

Thinner TVs are helping to save the planet

One welcome side-effect of the new breed of ultra-thin TVs has come to light in a recent report from Hitachi Japan - apparently, they're better for the environment.

Speaking of plans for its television division [PDF link] the company disclosed that it has assigned 40 engineers to work on reducing the power consumed by plasma sets over the next year and a half.

Don't melt me, bro

The facts that thinner TVs need to run cooler than chubbier models so they don't overheat and that plasma panels don't need a backlight will combine to cut the power demands of future models.

Incidentally, Hitachi also disclosed its TV roadmap, indicating that it will slim plasma TVs down to around 10mm between 2010 and 2012. The same period will also see it introduce 15mm-thick LCD sets, with the plan stating that 15mm is as thin as LCD can get because of the need to build in a backlight.

Collapsible Surf Board

As apartments and cars become increasingly compact, that surfboard you never seem to find the time to use just takes up more and more space. Nicholas Notara has decided to devote some time to the problem and has created the collapsible surfboard. This carbon-fiber board has been carefully designed to maintain the balance and weight of its traditional counterpart, but with the help of two pins and a quick release lever can halve in size. A hot-swappable fin system completes the board with style and presents a viable concept that may make a surfboard purchase not such a bad idea.

Geocacher causes Auckland bomb scare, Bostonians find soul-mates

In a world gone mad with fear, another global city has ground to a halt in the wake of harmless fun. Like Boston's visceral aversion to Mooninites, Auckland New Zealand has demonstrated an armed distaste for Geocaching. Geochaching is a GPS treasure-hunting game where participants find hidden containers placed around this big blue planet. Unfortunately, security caught the gamer on CCTV strapping a package to a railing near Aotea Center; they then called in the bomb squad. Tip to geocachers: don't wear a bearded, ninja-suit when placing your cache in busy urban areas.

AT&T's Palm Centro en route for launch next week?

Can't you just feel the excitement in the air? AT&T stores are apparently starting to spout off about white, $99 Centros being available starting next Tuesday, February 19, and it seems like a pretty plausible date. We've separately been told that the cute lil' Garnet handsets are expected to be shipping to stores some time this week -- just in time to make the 19th a reality for customers eager to get their paws on the latest tech Palm has to offer -- while previous intel had indicated that it'd definitely be available some time before early April. In other words: yeah, we believe it.

Hybrids delaying fuel-cells and other technologies

To most, hybrid vehicles like the Prius are a step in the right direction towards a future of ‘greener’ motoring but a new study has found that such cars are actually holding back other alternative powertrain technologies like hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and all-electric cars. French researchers have found that a “misinformed craze” surrounding hybrids has delayed other technologies and is drawing a majority of research dollars.

Petrol-electric hybrids are not environmentally sustainable because they still rely on fossil fuels, however carmakers are still pouring millions of dollars into improving the technology instead of focusing on better alternatives. There’s also the fact that many modern diesel vehicles and even some petrol compact cars achieve much better mileage figures than hybrid halo cars like the Prius.

Consumers are convinced that hybrids are the solution, researchers Jean-Jacques Chanaron and Julius Teske claim in their paper Hybrid Vehicles: A Temporary Step.”There is a general convergence of strategies toward promoting hybrid vehicles as the mid-term solution to very low-emissions and high-mileage vehicles,” the researchers say. “But a convergence is based more on customer perception triggered by very clever marketing and communications campaigns than on pure rational scientific arguments and may result in the need for any manufacturer operating in the U.S. to have a hybrid electric vehicle in its model range in order to survive.”

Fortunately, there are carmakers out there pushing for alternatives. We’ve already seen Tesla’s all-electric roadster and next month Pininfarina will unveil a 700hp fuel-cell concept so there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Etched Door lit by LEDs

Smilodon has found a great use of some LEDs!. To make the Etched Door LED lighting effect, the light travels from the edges of the glass and is not seen until it hits the etched portion. Using two LED colors really makes the end result pop!

"I also used a 4 layer glass. Two outer layers of 3mm float glass and two inner layers of 3mm plexi glass where the image were engraved. I had to use plexiglass as it conducts light way better than normal glass. The sheets are engraved on the opposite sides of each other. In a perfect world i could have engraved the same side of each sheet. however, if i did that the images would look great if they were looked at from straight in front. But if you look at them slightly from the side the images wouldn’t match. (the images would be 3mm apart from each other.) To encounter this the engraved sides are facing each other. The problem is that one image will look a little bit clearer from one side. This turned out to be way less of a problem than i first thought."

Lite-On factory fire threatens Dell and HP monitor business

A fire at Lite-On's factory in China this month is set to have rippling repercussions on the desktop monitor business. In all, 14 of Lite-On's LCD monitor production lines have been affected by the damage. The very same lines which supply those hi-speced, low priced monitors to Dell and HP, who along with Lenovo are Lite-On's top contract partners. Our advice? If you're on the fence with a purchase then you'd best hop off. Dell and HP are looking at a 20% and 22% panel shortage, respectively.

Nokia N96 Hands-On: Basically a Video Oriented N95

The N95 smartphone just does fine with its video playback. But the N96's 16GB of internal memory, slightly bigger 2.8-inch screen, DVB TV tuner, special video browsing UI and kickstand make it better than its pappy.

Note: The back of the phone has a new designer texture that we like a lot more than the now generic velvechron grip coating you see on a lot of handsets. We didn't get to play N-Gage on this this phone to test out the gaming specific button backlights (another upgrade from the N95) but we'll have some video of that next.

LG Prada Phone Now Comes in Silver with New, Matching UI

It's hard to believe that, just a year ago, the name of the phone on everyone's lips was LG's collaboration with Prada, the sexy touchscreen number that let its users believe that their fingers were fashion (or something.) And now, post iPhone, what of the Prada phone? Well, a silver version is now available in Europe, complete with new UI (also silver, apparently) and matching silver accessories. It's available in most of Europe, but don't expect to see it Stateside anytime soon. A couple more pics after the jump.

Apple updates trademarks to include videogames

pple is applying to update its many trademarks to include videogames, specifically handheld products.

A listing on the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that the iPod maker has filed an application to cover, "Toys, games and playthings, namely, handheld units for playing electronic games; handheld units for playing videogames; stand alone videogame machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with televisions receivers only; LCD games machines, electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games."

Apple currently sells games for its iPod media player, with EA, PopCap and Namco all supplying titles sold through Apple's iTunes.

The company has long been rumoured to make a more significant step in the games space, most recently following the launch of the iPhone.

Some industry watchers are sceptical the company would unveil a device purely for videogames, but rather that Apple prefers to create gadgets that cater to multiple forms of entertainment.

Motorola's pathetic MWC showing: Z6w, W161, and W181

Oh my, when you roll into Barcelona for Mobile World Congress you'd best be packing your A-game. Instead, troubled Motorola makes the trans-continental jump with a pair of updates to existing units and a duo of affordable low-enders. The niche DH01n GPS navigator and Mobile TV we already peeped. That leaves the Z6w -- a WiFi version of the Z6m -- and a pair of affordable, low-end handsets dubbed the W181 and W161. The new W-series gear ship in dual-band GSM 900/1800 or GSM 850/1900 configurations with built-in FM radio, USB 1.1 (yes, 1.1), and 128 x 128 pixel display which brings 65k colors on the W181 or black and white on the W161. Damn Moto, we can feel your embarrassment from here. You too, apparently, since you pulled your MWC teaser video

MusicPad Pro Tablet For Bleeding Edge Musicians

Last week I wrote about the E-Paper Music Score concept that basically replaced a traditional book of sheet music with a flexible e-paper display. Well given it was just a concept you won’t be able to buy one anytime soon, but it looks like there’s a similar solution already on the market. Instead of e-paper the MusicPad Pro uses a readily available 12.1 inch TFT color display. While the 1024 x 768 resolution is probably more than adequate, it’s also a touch screen allowing musicians to annotate the music or jot notes in multiple colors.

As Apple has shown with iTunes, available content is just as important as the technology, so FreeHand also has an online store with over 98,000 titles of downloadable sheet music already available. The average price seems to be about $3.95, though some titles are slightly cheaper ($1.95) and some are considerably more expensive. ($59.95)

Though with a price tag of $899 on the FreeHand website, I think the MusicPad Pro should include more than just 64MB of memory, particularly since I don’t see any mention of being able to expand that limited amount with flash memory cards.

StudioM 24K gold Fiat 500 Pepita

At this year’s Scrigno Tesori d’Italia luxury event in Rome, car customizer StudioM rolled out a Fiat 500 minicar covered in a 24k gold micro-powder paint scheme and nicknamed the ‘Pepita’. Last year the same company showcased a Maserati Quattroporte painted in the same finish but this time ‘round StudioM decided to go over the top and kit the show car with an entire jewelery box assortment of precious materials.

The list includes a set of OZ wheels and tires brushed with gold, an Australian mother of pearl inlay for the dashboard, gear shifter and handbrake, pedals lined with Swarovski crystals and designer floor mats made out of cashmere.

Anyone interested in buying the car will have to front up at least €60,000 but StudioM are more than happy to make it even more exclusive by adding any kind of upholstery, with materials such as crocodile, snake, shark, rayfish or lizard skin and swapping the Swarovski crystals for any one of 48 other precious stones.

Honda reveals 2009 Accord Euro Tourer and sedan

Earlier today we were treated with the reveal of the Acura TSX sedan and now Honda has released details about its Accord Euro stablemate. As the images reveal the new Accord Euro’s styling is an evolution of the current model, although it’s significantly wider and slightly lower than its predecessor, and adopts a more chiseled appearance with muscular wheel arches to emphasize the car’s wider track.

Set to be unveiled at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, the all-new Accord Euro will arrive in both Tourer wagon and sedan bodystyles with three different engine options. Making its debut in the Accord Euro is Honda’s second-generation diesel engine dubbed i-DTEC. It employs latest piezoelectric multi-stage fuel injection technology, more efficient exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter for significantly reduced emissions and peak output of 150hp at 4,000rpm and 350Nm (258lb-ft) of torque at 2,000rpm.

The diesel mill will be joined by two petrol four-cylinder units, a 156hp 2.0L motor and a 200hp 2.4L unit. All three engines are matched to a 6-speed manual transmission, while both petrol engines have the option of a 5-speed automatic. An automatic gearbox for the i-DTEC engine will be launched in early 2009.

The cars will be on display in Geneva next month and are due to hit showrooms by the middle of the year.

The All-New Honda Accord Euro

Honda announced the all-new Accord for Europe. Aimed squarely at challenging established premium contenders in the D-segment, Honda’s all-new Accord saloon and Tourer offer sporty styling, greater refinement and a unique package of safety systems, together with excellent dynamic capabilities. Strong environmental credentials in the form of an all Euro 5 emissions compliant engine line-up further emphasize Honda’s intent with the the all-new Accord.

Significantly wider and slightly lower, the styling adopts a more emotional, sporty motif. The ‘sharp-edged’ design, with pronounced muscular wheelarches that emphasize the car’s wider track, gives the Accord a distinctive, strong stance with a solid, planted feel. The distinctive nose and more flowing lines deliver a tauter and more athletic shape.

The evolution from the previous generation Accord is even more pronounced in the case of the Tourer, where a greater emphasis on load carrying practicality has evolved into a more dynamic expression of its advanced technology, while still retaining a strong degree of versatility and practicality.

Three advanced new engines with some of the lowest emissions in their segment
The new range is one of the first to offer a complete engine line-up that will comply with the forthcoming Euro 5 emissions regulations which aren’t due to be introduced until September 2009. The exceptional environmental credentials haven’t been achieved at the cost of driving enjoyment, however, and greater frugality is matched by greater performance and flexibility.

Making its debut is Honda’s second-generation diesel engine which builds on the outstanding qualities of the award-winning i-CTDi unit to raise the bar in the diesel stakes once again. Its advanced technology and overall capabilities place it firmly at the forefront of diesel development and underpins the Accord’s claim to offer one of the strongest combinations of dynamic performance and environmental responsibility in the marketplace.

Like its predecessor, the new i-DTEC engine is compact, lightweight, refined and quiet in operation. It employs the latest piezoelectric multi-stage fuel injection technology, more efficient exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter for significantly reduced emissions. At the same time both power and torque levels have been increased for a sportier driving experience. Output is 10 PS greater at 150 PS/110 kW at the same 4,000 rpm, while peak torque is now 350 Nm at 2,000 rpm.

The 2.0-liter i-VTEC offers similar levels of performance to its predecessor – 156 PS at 6,300 rpm – but builds on its class leading fuel economy. Key technological changes include increased diameter intake valves, further optimized valve lift and timing and increased inlet and exhaust air flow volumes.

The 2.4-liter engine is more powerful, delivering 200 PS at 7000 rpm and peak torque of 233 Nm at 4500 rpm – up from 190 PS and 223 Nm. Behind the figures are a compression ratio increased from 10.5 to 11.0:1, larger diameter valves, revised valve timing, and reduced exhaust system pressures.

6-speed manual/5-speed automatic
All three engines are matched to a 6-speed manual transmission, while both petrol engines have the option of a 5-speed automatic.

Manual models feature a ‘Shift Indicator Light’ or SIL which appears in the center of the rev counter. ‘UP’ or ‘DOWN’ are displayed to advise the driver of the optimum point (in terms of best fuel economy) at which to change gear; Honda tests have demonstrated fuel savings of as much as 5 per cent simply by following these commands.

The 5-speed automatic transmission now has a straight ‘P R N D S’ gate: using the steering wheel paddles in S mode provides a sequential shift mode, allowing manual shifting and gear hold.

Agile, secure handling
Enthusiastic drivers will also appreciate the new Accord’s greater agility. A lowered center of gravity, a wider track and the all-new front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension with variable rate dampers, plus greater body rigidity mean that the Accord more readily reacts to driver input. Handling is more responsive and confidence-inspiring and body roll is much reduced.

Speed sensitive electric power steering is standard on all models and the new axial system features a high output, low inertia brushless motor which provides excellent steering feel at higher speeds for a sense of stability and confidence. A quicker steering ratio has also been adopted in keeping with the Accord’s more agile chassis characteristics.

A comprehensive safety package
Complementing an armory of passive safety features is an outstanding array of dynamic systems delivering even greater security. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is standard across the range and is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The new Accord also features an innovative system in which the capabilities of both VSA and the car’s Electric Power Steering are brought to bear. Called Motion Adaptive EPS, it detects instability in slippery conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction.

The input is barely noticeable and control of the steering remains with the driver at all times. But this supporting steering torque is enough to prompt the driver to act intuitively and the driver’s reaction as a result is enough to regain stability or to shorten braking distances, allowing control to be maintained.

Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS) optional across the range
Optionally available on Executive grade on 2.2 i-DTEC and 2.4 i-VTEC is Honda’s Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS), a suite of three ground-breaking technologies that raise safety to a new level. The first of these is the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) which uses a camera to detect the car deviating from a traffic lane and provides steering torque when necessary, thereby reducing the burden of motorway driving while at the same time enhancing safety.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a millimetre-wave radar to maintain a consistent distance to a vehicle directly in front, for more relaxed, less tiring driving.

The third ADAS system is the Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) which monitors the following distance and closing rate between the Accord and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact when a collision becomes unavoidable.

These systems complement the Accord’s passive safety features which include front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, dual stage front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags, full length curtain airbags and ISOFIX fittings and tether anchor points for secure childseat fixture on all models. There are also front seat active headrests which are triggered when the occupant is pushed into the seat in the event of a rear impact, so causing a rigid plate to activate a link to the headrest which pushes it forward to support the head.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
Progressively introduced throughout the Honda range, the Accord’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure provides significantly enhanced occupant protection in a variety of real-world crash conditions.

A front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways – and away from the passenger compartment. This is particularly important where a frontal collision occurs between vehicles of differing heights, weights or frame construction.

To achieve top level, side impact safety, Honda’s engineers have increased the side section of the frame and chosen different material specifications to provide the desired level of stiffness and strength for critical areas, without adding unnecessary weight.

The new Accord also incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already familiar from recent Honda models, including windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges alongside an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Premium interior with carefully selected materials and outstanding fit and finish
The sporty feel of the cockpit is reflected in a fascia design characterised by a strong feeling of personal space for both the driver and front passenger. Distinctive silver trim sweeps inwards across the fascia from either side before continuing down into the center console. Stylish and highly supportive front seats have larger bolsters while a new internal structure is designed to reduce any transmission of vibration.

Black with silver trim, the sporty three spoke steering wheel holds a complete suite of controls – including audio, cruise control and mobile telephone control. It is fully adjustable for reach and rake, with an extra 10 degrees of tilt adjustment compared to the previous Accord.

The new Accord features ‘floating’ backlit instruments and contained within the center of the speedometer face is an LCD multi-information display showing a variety of information – controls positioned on the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the display through multiple screens of information.

A new feature is a service reminder that presents the driver with either the distance or days remaining to a required service, with an enlarged warning symbol appearing when the due date is imminent.

Storage space includes two center console side pockets; a lidded storage area to side of the steering wheel; large front door pockets able to hold bottles and maps; bottle holders in the rear door panels, and a large center console box. Rather than a fold-down pocket design, the large glovebox now has an independent lid and is subdivided with a tissue box compartment as well as space secured for a manual. The lid of the center console box doubles up as an armrest and is slide-adjustable by 89 mm. Two cupholders are provided in the center console, while rear seat passengers have access to a further two contained in the center armrest, revealed when it is folded down.
